0. INTRODUCTION
===============
o This document provides information on various releases of "The Master Levels
for Doom II" and "Final Doom", and compares the game-console versions to the
original PC editions, and to each other.

o Note that the PC and Xbox "Master Levels" titles are bundled with additional
content (games, Episodes or mapsets) which is not evaluated in detail here.

o Apple Macintosh ("Mac") and other computer-based editions of various PC Doom
titles exist, however they are identical in most aspects to the PC versions,
and so are generally not addressed in this document. Other editions of The
Master Levels and/or Final Doom which are not addressed here may be included
  in future updates.

o In the descriptions included in this document, "Pros" are notable features of
the indicated title, some of which may set it above other versions covered
here; "Cons" are what might cause the indicated title to be rated below the
other versions covered here; "Miscellaneous" notes cover those features which
do not necessarily fall under the other categories.

o This document is 79 characters wide, and is best viewed in a monospaced font.
The master HTML version is located here: http://ClassicDOOM.com/fdoomcmp.htm
The master text version is located here: http://ClassicDOOM.com/fdoomcmp.txt

o This document is essentially a companion piece to an earlier "DoomComp" file,
which compares various editions of "Doom", "Ultimate Doom" and "Doom II: Hell
on Earth". Access the DoomComp file at: http://ClassicDOOM.com/doomcomp.htm

1. MASTER LEVELS/FINAL DOOM: GENERAL

PlayStation Final Doom games referred to in this document all feature these
  enemies, weapons and power-ups:

  Monsters |Weapons |Ammo |Items and Artifacts

  Zombieman | | |
  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Notes: Not all monsters, items, etc., appear in all games at all difficulty
levels. Also, some items found on a given map during a single-player game
may be absent from the same map during a multiplayer game, and vice versa.

o All Master Levels/Final Doom games referred to in this document also include
(in alphabetical order): An Automap (which may be scrolled and/or zoomed in/
out), barrels (explosive), cheat codes, Cooperative game mode, corrosive
floor areas (slime, etc.), crushing ceilings, Deathmatch game mode,
elevators/lifts, monster fights (monsters fighting monsters), music (during
the game and between map levels), secret rooms, "tally screens" between map
  levels, teleporters, and variable lighting.

o In all Doom/Doom II games, a player character may walk, turn, run, "jump"
(run across small gaps), and side-step/strafe, both in first-person mode and
  while the Automap is displayed.

o All Doom/Doom II games can experience speed fluctuations during game play.
In general, overall game speed will drop/rise with an increase/decrease in
sprites and textures displayed on the screen.

o Almost all non-computer Doom/Doom II games exclude some of the maps that
existed in the original PC versions, and/or include maps not found in the PC
versions. Because of this, the exact playing order of map levels may differ
from that of the comparable PC title.

2. PC DOOM II-BASED GAMES: GENERAL
==================================
o The PC software package "Final Doom" includes a pair of Doom II-based games.
In this document the 21-map "Master Levels" collection for the PC may also be
referred to or evaluated as a Doom II or Doom II-based game.

o Various models and classes of IBM-PC 486 computers, and PC-compatible 486 and
Pentium computers were used as test systems for the various PC games/mapsets
described in this document (version 1.9 of the PC Doom II/Final Doom games
were tested). For testing multiplayer games, these systems were connected to
similar systems via various network and/or modem connections.

o Pros: In general, more features and options, and greater versatility than the
Xbox and PlayStation ("PSX") console games. 2 players may play together via
modem connection; up to 4 may play via network connection. On a modern PC
gameplay is somewhat faster/smoother than in PSX Final Doom. Ability to use
and configure a variety of input devices (keyboard, mouse, joystick, etc.).
Supports 9 screen sizes, which also allows the first-person view to be
expanded to fill the entire screen. More monster types available than in the
Xbox/PSX games. Deathmatch games may include monsters. A game in progress
may be saved at any point and restored later to the same point, and saved
games retain copious information (player location, health, weapon, ammo and
armor status, live/dead status of all monsters on the map level, etc.).
Thousands of third-party map levels are available for use with these games.
Built-in ability to record and play back single-player and multiplayer games.
Extensive documentation and reference material is/was included with the
original commercial PC releases. Separate programs exist which allow players
to create or edit map levels, artwork and sounds for the PC games. A variety
of free third-party engines have been released which can provide improved
graphics, better multiplayer support, and other new features. Large variety
  of cheat codes.

o Cons: Some infrequently-encountered flaws exist in the original commercial PC
Doom/Doom II engines, including a program bug that creates nearly-intangible
monsters, and a bug that can allow a player character to become trapped
partially inside solid objects when reloading saved games. Must have 2
separate PC titles ("Final Doom" and "The Master Levels for Doom II") to play
all of the same map levels found in the Sony PlayStation Final Doom game. No
split-screen multiplayer option as in the Xbox Doom II Master Levels game. A
player can only cycle between fist and chain saw while a Berserk power-up is
  in effect.

o Miscellaneous: Games by id Software. Various formats, typically CD-ROM.
Decent graphics resolution and quality; Very good in some hardware/software
configurations. On occasion, when a Pain Elemental monster dies, the Lost
Souls generated by its explosion may be flung through nearby walls, where
they may become trapped (this has little effect on the game, since Lost Souls
do not count towards a Kills score).

3. PC MASTER LEVELS FOR DOOM II
===============================
o "The Master Levels for Doom II" for the PC/Mac is a CD-ROM which contains
thousands of maps arranged into two separate collections: The "Master Levels"
collection (21 Doom II maps), and the "Maximum Doom" collection (433 Doom
maps/files, plus 3,060 Doom II maps/files). Also included are the complete
retail editions of The Ultimate Doom, Doom II: Hell on Earth, and Heretic.
However, the game files on the CD-ROM are encrypted, and may only be used
with a passcode provided by id Software once the CD-ROM has been registered.
The map files on the Master Levels CD-ROM are not encrypted, and so may be
used freely with all compatible releases of Doom, Ultimate Doom or Doom II.

o In this document the 21-map "Master Levels" collection for the PC may be
referred to or evaluated as a Doom II or Doom II-based game.

o Pros: Wide variety of map levels on the CD-ROM, some chosen by id Software
(creators of Doom and Doom II) for their quality. Software package includes
a free DOS-based menu-driven loader utility that allows players to configure
and run Doom/Doom II games, and/or view descriptions of the 21 Master Levels
maps. See also section 2: PC Doom II-Based Games: General.

o Cons: The Master Levels CD-ROM does not include its own unlocked game engine,
so can initially only be used as an accessory to other Doom/Doom II games.
Most maps in the "Master Levels" collection have the same map number, which
prevents them from being loaded together during a game (any map imported into
a game always replaces any existing map with the same number). Some maps in
the "Maximum Doom" collection are of poor quality or are non-functional. See
also section 2: PC Doom II-Based Games: General.

o Miscellaneous: CD format; 1 CD. The software package contains a total of
3,514 maps/files. Map WADs were designed by a wide variety of independent
contributors. These map files may be used with most Doom II releases,
including PC Doom II (Doom 2: Hell on Earth, version 1.9), and PC Final Doom
(which contains Doom 2: TNT - Evilution, and Doom 2: Plutonia Experiment).
See also section 2: PC Doom II-Based Games: General.

Notes: TEETH.WAD contains 2 map levels; all other PC Master Levels WAD files
  contain 1 map each.
Note that when a map is imported into a PC Doom II game, the new map will
retain the name of the default map normally used in the game. For example,
the map contained in ATTACK.WAD will still be referred to as "ENTRYWAY" when
imported into PC Doom II (Doom 2: Hell on Earth).
The Xbox map names in this table are the actual names for the Xbox Master
Levels maps. (The names displayed on the tally screens are incorrect, as are
almost all names and numbers displayed on the Automap screen.)

4. PC FINAL DOOM
================
o Pros: Contains 2 separate Doom II-based games in one software package ("TNT/
Evilution" and "The Plutonia Experiment"), providing twice as many maps as
were found in the first PC Doom II game (Doom 2: Hell on Earth), and more
than twice as many maps as are found in PSX Final Doom. The PC Final Doom CD
includes "Doom 95" software, which allows Doom/Doom II games to be configured
and run at high-resolution (versus the original DOS-based games) in a Windows
95-compatible environment. See also section 2: PC Doom II Games: General.

o Cons: The initial commercial release of the TNT/Evilution WAD file contains
an error in map level 31 ("PHARAOH") which may prevent further progress in
the game (the yellow keycard is missing). Play is not continuous between
Episodes as it can be in PSX Final Doom (a player cannot exit the last map
of one Episode, and seamlessly resume the game on the first map of the other
Episode). See also section 2: PC Doom II Games: General.

o Miscellaneous: Initially released in CD format; 1 CD. PC Final Doom contains
a total of 64 maps: 32 in the "TNT - Evilution" game/Episode, 32 in the
"Plutonia Experiment" game/Episode. Both games in PC Final Doom include some
new artwork for surfaces, objects, and outdoor backgrounds and skies. The
initial commercial release of Final Doom contains an error which can cause a
crash during "Attract mode" (after 3 demos are played, Final Doom attempts to
run another demo, and fails). See also section 2: PC Doom II Games: General.

further progress in the game (the yellow keycard is missing). A patch to
correct this error is available from Team TNT (access http://www.teamtnt.com
and click on "Bugs & Fixes"). There are also cheat codes that will enable a
trapped player to exit map 31 (access http://ClassicDOOM.com/doomcode.htm for

5. MICROSOFT XBOX MASTER LEVELS
===============================
o Xbox Master Levels ("Doom II Master Levels") is a Doom II-based game included
with the Xbox game "Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil". Also included are Xbox
versions of the PC classic Doom games "Ultimate Doom: Thy Flesh Consumed" and
"Doom II: Hell on Earth". For more information on those Xbox games, access:
  http://ClassicDOOM.com/doomcomp.htm

o A Microsoft Xbox, model F23-00097, equipped with one standard Xbox controller
(model K04-00001), was used as the test system for the Xbox Doom II Master
Levels game described in this document. For testing split-screen multiplayer
games, additional controllers (K04-00001, K86-00001, third-party) were added
  to the system.

o Pros: The "Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil" Xbox game includes more overall Doom
content than is found in PlayStation ("PSX") Final Doom, or any individual PC
title covered here. Xbox Master Levels maps are very nearly identical to the
equivalent PC maps, and so include all of the original monsters, and almost
all of the original art, textures, music, etc. In general, these Xbox maps
have fewer changes or omissions than the PSX Master Levels maps. Supports
split-screen Deathmatch and Cooperative gameplay for 2 to 4 players. Very
fast gameplay and screen-refresh rate in both single-player and split-screen
multiplayer games. Unlike the PSX game, single-player games in progress may
be saved at any point and restored later to the same point, saved games
retain copious information (player location, health, weapon, ammo and armor
status, live/dead status of all monsters on the map level, etc.), and this
game supports 9 screen sizes, which also allows the first-person view to be
expanded to fill the entire screen. Games played at "Nightmare" skill
include re-spawning monsters (a feature rarely found in console Doom games).

o Cons: Some infrequently-encountered flaws exist in the original commercial PC
Doom/Doom II games which were ported unchecked into this release, including a
program bug that creates nearly-intangible monsters, and a bug that can allow
a player character to become trapped partially inside solid objects when
reloading saved games. In addition to the flaws ported from the PC games,
the Xbox Doom games may sometimes freeze or crash where the original PC games
would not. Cheat functions can be accidentally implemented during play (some
common gameplay actions have button-use patterns that match certain cheat
codes). No controller customizing allowed. No built-in ability to adjust
sound effects volume or music volume. No ability to independently scroll the
Automap (the Automap display is always in "Follow mode"). Most map names and
numbers are incorrect on the tally screens and Automap screens. No ability
to choose a skill level for multiplayer games; Deathmatch and Co-Op games can
only be played at skill 3 ("Hurt Me Plenty"). Items do not re-spawn in
Deathmatch games. Deathmatch games are player-only (monsters cannot be
included). Weapons are cyclic-access only (although weapon choices can be
cycled in both directions). Cannot import external map levels. No option to
record and play back games/demos. Some enemy types are not in "fast" mode in
games played at "Nightmare" skill. No "Gamma Correction" feature.

o Miscellaneous: Port by Nerve Software and Vicarious Visions. Xbox DVD
format; 1 DVD. Graphics resolution and quality are virtually identical to
the original PC games. In "split screen" mode, the individual player screens
retain the aspect ratio of a full-sized screen; As such, the first-person
views do not expand to fill all available space on the display device for 2-
or 3-player games. Standard "Doom II" sky/background textures are used for
each map (versus a variety of starry backgrounds in the PC/PSX games). Music
tracks play at a slightly different rate than the equivalent tracks in the
original PC games. When cycling through weapons, the double-barrelled "Super
Shotgun" weapon slot is located between the chain saw and fist (in the PC/PSX
games, both shotguns are between the pistol and chaingun). Player can select
the fist weapon at any time, whether or not a chain saw or Berserk Pack has
been acquired. Some sound effects are "pitch shifted" at random, which adds
some variety to game sounds (this is a feature found in the earliest PC Doom
releases, but later abandoned). Cheat codes are allowed in games played at
  "Nightmare" skill.

as are almost all names and numbers displayed on the Automap screen.)

6. SONY PLAYSTATION FINAL DOOM
==============================
o Note that although this PlayStation game is titled "Final Doom", it includes
13 "Master Levels" maps as its first Episode.

o A Sony PlayStation ("PSX"), model SCPH-1001, equipped with one standard
PlayStation controller (model SCPH-1080), was used as the test system for the
PSX Final Doom described in this document. For testing multiplayer games the
system was connected to an identical system via the PlayStation Link cable
  (model SCPH-1040).

o Pros: PlayStation Final Doom is currently the only console-based Doom game
that includes any of the map levels found in PC Final Doom. 2-player ability
via system link. Unlike the Xbox Master Levels game, extensive controller
customizing is allowed (Fire button can swap functions with Speed button or
Activate button, etc.), sound and music volume can be adjusted independently,
"Follow mode" can be toggled on/off in Automap view, multiplayer games may be
played at multiple skill levels, items in Deathmatch games re-spawn, and the
skies and backgrounds in the Master Levels maps are similar to those in the
equivalent PC maps. A player may start the game on the first map of any
Episode ("MASTER LEVELS", "TNT" or "PLUTONIA") and play the game through to
the last map of the "PLUTONIA" Episode. This game supports the PlayStation
Mouse in addition to the standard game controller (an improvement over the
  earlier PlayStation Doom game).

o Cons: Many maps from PC Final Doom are missing (as are some maps from the PC
"Master Levels" mapset). Multiplayer games are limited to 2 players, and can
only be played via system link; No split-screen multiplayer option, as is
found in the Xbox Doom II Master Levels game. A player's progress in the
game is preserved by password codes, and passwords are only given after
successful completion of an Area (a player cannot save a game in the middle
of playing a map level, and then have it restored later to the same
position). When a "saved" game is restored, a player always restarts the
mission from the map's entry point. Game cannot make use of a memory card.
Some design flaws on certain map levels (inaccessible rooms or monsters,
etc.). Arch-Vile and Spider Mastermind enemies from equivalent PC maps do
not appear in this game. Deathmatch games are player-only (monsters cannot
be included). Game does not save controller or sound configuration settings.
Upper limits on ammo are not shown in the status bar; only the currently-held
weapon has an ammo level displayed. Cannot expand the first-person view to
fill the entire screen. Occasionally objects in the foreground are partially
overlaid by background wall or floor textures. Weapons are cyclic-access
only (although weapon choices may be cycled while the game is paused). From
powering up the game system, there is a relatively long delay (over a minute)
before the player can actually start playing. Cannot import external map
levels. No option to record and play back games/ demos. All of the built-in
cheat codes are comparatively long and complex (for example, an invincibility
code is 5 button presses on the PC and 10 on the PSX). No "Gamma Correction"
  feature.

o Miscellaneous: Port by id Software and Williams Entertainment, Inc. CD
format; 1 CD. 30 map levels, all of which are found in the equivalent PC
titles. In general, the basic map level layouts in this game closely match
those of the equivalent PC titles, but there are some changes on some maps,
and some original objects and/or textures from the PC editions are missing.
Good graphics resolution and quality. Gameplay speed is adequate, but will
be somewhat slower than a Master Levels/Final Doom game played on an Xbox or
modern computer. Map level, skill level, health, armor, weapon and ammo
information is translated to a password code which is given after successful
completion of each map level. The last password entered or generated on the
password screen may be re-entered with a single button press (useful when,
for example, a player is killed and wishes to restart the map level with a
non-default status). Game information stored in a password may be inaccurate
(health, armor and ammo level numbers tend to be rounded). Features music
(and other background audio effects) not found in the PC/Xbox games. Monster
and weapon sounds tend to differ from the sounds used in the PC/Xbox games.
Health potions and Spiritual Armor bonuses add 2% to a player's health or
armor (versus 1% in the PC/Xbox games). In PC Doom II-based games the two
shotgun types are both represented as weapon 3 in the status bar; In PSX
Final Doom the two shotgun types are separated into weapons 3 and 4. No
"Nightmare" skill level. In this game, "blurred" objects are translucent and
faded, but otherwise maintain their normal colors and surface features (in
the PC games, "blurred" objects, when visible, are a translucent gray, with a
flat, flowing/scrambled surface). Another version of the Spectre monster
appears in this game: the "Nightmare Spectre", which appears visibly darker,
and is harder to kill than the normal Spectre. The Nightmare Spectre is not
a 1-to-1 replacement for the missing Arch-Vile monster. Very tall rooms or
areas from equivalent maps in the PC games are lower in these maps. An
"X-ray vision" cheat code not found in the PC games is included. An animated
"wall of fire" exterior background that is not found in the PC/Xbox games
appears in some map levels. Some monsters and monster projectiles tend to
move slower than their PC-game counterparts. Graphics "noise" may sometimes
be seen along the top or bottom edges of walls. On occasion the "marine
face" in the status bar explodes when the player character is killed. On
occasion, when a Pain Elemental monster dies, the Lost Souls generated by its
explosion may be flung through nearby walls, where they may become trapped.
Lost Souls that are trapped behind walls may still be visible, but may be
impossible to kill (this has little effect on the game, since Lost Souls do
not count towards a Kills score). Some monsters on the original PC maps are
replaced with different monsters on the equivalent maps in this version. In
2-player games, both player characters wear a green uniform. In Cooperative
games Frags are not indicated in the tally screens. The "Lots of Goodies"
cheat code will not add keys if they are not necessary. Invisible solids, or
surfaces with 1-way transparency (as found in the PC games) are missing.
Cannot place numerical markings on the Automap. No walk-through-walls cheat
code (as in the PC games). Cheat codes may be entered with the controller,
and/or may be pre-loaded into the game with various third-party devices.
